KIKUNOI: An Exquisite Taste of Kyoto’s Kaiseki Culinary Heritage
Kikunoi Foyer
Tucked away in the historic streets of Kyoto, Kikunoi stands as a pinnacle of kaiseki dining—a traditional multi-course Japanese meal that embodies the seasonal and regional flavors of Japan. On my recent visit, I had the privilege of experiencing this Michelin-starred restaurant, and it was nothing short of extraordinary.
An Atmosphere of Tranquility
As I approached Kikunoi, I was immediately drawn in by the charming wooden facade and serene garden that envelops the restaurant. The interior is a beautiful blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics, complete with tatami mats, sliding doors, and elegant decor—creating an inviting atmosphere that feels both intimate and refined.

The Art of Kaiseki Dining
Kikunoi is well-known for its dedication to kaiseki, a dining style that emphasizes seasonal ingredients and meticulous preparation. Under the expert guidance of Chef Yoshihiro Murata, every dish is a work of art, thoughtfully curated to highlight the essence of each ingredient.
We were presented with the kaiseki tasting menu, designed to take us on a journey through the four seasons. Each course showcased not only the flavors of the ingredients but also their captivating presentation.
Appetiser
A Symphony of Flavours
Our culinary journey began with an appetizer of chilled tofu garnished with fresh herbs and a delicate soy sauce, embodying the freshness of summer. The silken texture, paired with the subtle flavors, was the perfect introduction to the meal.
Next, we savored a beautifully arranged sashimi platter featuring the finest seasonal fish, artfully displayed with colorful garnishes. Each bite melted in my mouth, reflecting the chef’s commitment to sourcing only the highest quality seafood.
Grilled Bamboo Shoot (Shun Ryori)
One of the standout components was a grilled bamboo shoot, a delicacy that epitomizes the essence of spring. The bamboo shoot was expertly charred, bringing out its natural sweetness while maintaining a satisfying crunch. Accompanied by a drizzle of fragrant sesame oil, it served as a delightful reminder of the season's bounty, showcasing Kikunoi's dedication to highlighting locally sourced, seasonal ingredients throughout the meal.
As the meal progressed, the highlight was undoubtedly the turtle soup, meticulously prepared that enhanced its natural richness and herbal aroma. The dish was both comforting and luxurious, a true representation of kaiseki philosophy.
The Sweet Finale
No kaiseki experience is complete without dessert, and Kikunoi did not disappoint. We concluded our meal with a refreshing lemon sorbet and a bowl of finely whisked matcha. It was a delightful balance of flavors and textures, leaving a lasting impression and beautifully capping off the meal.
